Chiller Van or Chiller Truck — Which One Does Your Business Need?
Unlike the chiller-vs-freezer decision, this isn’t about temperature — a chiller van and a chiller truck both run the same 0°C to +8°C range. The real decision is about size, manoeuvrability, and how your delivery route actually works. Get this one wrong and you’ll either be paying for truck capacity you don’t use, or squeezing a van full of cargo it wasn’t built to carry efficiently.
Lower — needs loading dock or wider access, less suited to congested inner-city stops
Best route type
Multi-stop, smaller drops
Single or few large-volume drops
Typical cost
Lower per booking
Higher, but lower cost per ton moved
Choose a Chiller Van If...
You’re running a multi-stop route — restaurant supply, café delivery, small retail restocking — where you need to park and access tight spaces repeatedly through the day
Your per-delivery volume is modest — a few boxes to a couple of pallets, not a full warehouse transfer
You’re delivering into residential or dense commercial areas where a truck can’t easily park or manoeuvre
You need an hourly rental for a short job — see our rental plans page for hourly options, which are more commonly available on vans than trucks
Choose a Chiller Truck If...
You’re moving bulk volume — a full supermarket restock, a wholesale transfer, or a large catering order — in a single trip
Your route has one or few large-volume drop points rather than many small stops
You need higher tonnage capacity that a van simply can’t carry efficiently
You’re running a scheduled, high-volume distribution route where cost-per-ton matters more than maneuverability.
Common Mistake: Booking a Truck "Just in Case"
It’s tempting to book the larger vehicle for peace of mind, but a chiller truck on a tight multi-stop urban route often costs more in time — difficult parking, awkward reversing, slower turnaround per stop — than it saves in capacity. If your actual load fits a van, a van usually gets the job done faster and at lower cost, even if the truck “could” carry it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do chiller vans and chiller trucks run the same temperature range?
Yes — both hold 0°C to +8°C. The choice between them is about capacity and manoeuvrability, not temperature.
Can I switch from a van to a truck mid-contract if my volume grows?
Yes — contact us and we’ll adjust your booking to the right vehicle size as your route or volume changes.
Is a chiller truck always more cost-effective for large orders?
Usually per-ton, yes, but only if your route genuinely has the large-volume, few-stop shape a truck is built for. A multi-stop route with the same total volume split across smaller drops is often better served by a van, or two.
